THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS: Oxytetracycline is indicated for infections caused by the following organisms:
Mountain spotted fever Rocky, typhoid and typhus, Q fever, rickettsialpox and tick fever, caused by Rickettsia.
Respiratory infection caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Psittacosis caused by Chlamydia psittaci.
Trachoma caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, although the infectious agent is not always eliminated, as has been determined by immunofluorescence.
Inclusion conjunctivitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis can be treated with oral tetracyclines or with a combination of oral and topical agents.
Louse Borne Relapsing fever caused by Borrelia recurrentis.
Oxytetracycline is also indicated for the treatment of infections caused by gram-negative organisms as follows:
Plague caused by Yersinia pestis.
Tularemia caused by Francisella tularensis.
Bartonelosis baciliformis caused by Bartonella.
Bacteroides spp.
Cholera caused by Vibrio cholerae.
Campylobacter fetus.
Brucellosis caused by Brucella spp (in conjunction with streptomycin).
Because many strains of the following microorganisms have been shown to be resistant to tetracycline, it is recommended to culture and sensitivity tests.
Oxytetracycline is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by gram-negative bacteria following, when bacteriologic testing indicates appropriate susceptibility to it:
Escherichia coli.
Enterobacter aerogenes.
Shigella spp.
Acinetobacter spp.
Respiratory infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae.
Respiratory and urinary infections caused by Klebsiella spp.
Oxytetracycline is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by gram-positive bacteria following, when bacteriologic testing indicates appropriate susceptibility to it:
Upper respiratory tract infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Infections of skin and soft tissue infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus.
When is contraindicated penicillin, tetracyclines are alternative antibiotics in the treatment of infections:
Syphilis caused by Treponema pallidum and yaws caused by Treponema pertenue.
Listeriosis involving only focal infections caused by Listeria monocytogenes.
Clostridium spp.
Anthrax caused by Bacillus anthracis.
Vincent angina (acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis) caused by Leptotrichia buccalis.
Actinomycosis caused by Actinomyces spp.
Long-term treatment: In acne vulgaris and rosacea, oxytetracycline is useful in long-term therapy.
Adjunctive therapy: Tetracyclines may be a useful adjunct in cases of acute intestinal amebiasis with amebicides management.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION: Oral.
Dose: The total daily dose should be administered in equally divided doses given every 6hours. Treatment should continue for at least 24-48 hours after symptoms have subsided and the fever.
Adults: The usual daily dose of oxytetracycline is 1 to 2 g, divided into four equal doses, depending on the severity of the infection. In adults with an average severity infection, the usual dose of 1 g daily intakes can occur at 500 mg twice a day.
Children over eight years: The usual daily dose is 25 to 50 mg / kg body weight, divided into four equal doses.
